Since most of the multiple units used today are driven by electronic, so we generally use Electronic Multiple Units (EMU) as the translation for 动车组. Multiple units and traditional trains are different. For the traditional trains, only the locomotive (the head of the train) have engine that lead the whole train move forward. On multiple unites, there are more than one carriage can have engines. The Chinese word 动车组 means "units of carriage that can supply motivity." 动 means "power/motivity", 车 means "carriage", 组 means "unit". Multiple Units is the correct translation of 动车组.
