You save that much time only if you live near Dongzhimen, the only place where you can take the Airport Express. If you live far away, you still have to take buses, taxis, or subways to get to Dongzhimen before you can enjoy the time saving Airport Express way.

[...] Nab a taxi. These guys are all over the place, and it gets you from A to B in relative privacy — but at a price. (Flag fall already sets you back a handsome RMB 10 — good enough for five Subway rides (OK — an extra RMB 15 if you want to do the Airport Express...) [...]

@Hotpoter,

David did a good comparison of the options on <a href="http://subway.beijingatob.com/?p=7" rel="nofollow">BeijingAtoB.com</a>:

• A bus ride costs you CNY 16/person, taking you up to 70 minutes to reach the airport during rush hour (about 20 minutes if there are no jams).
• A freeway ride costs you CNY 10/car, plus the additional gas if you’re doing taxis. This, too, is jam-vulnerable.
• CNY 25/person guarantees you prompt arrival at T3 in 16 minutes (and T2 in 25); no jams, period.

RMB9 saves you up to 54 min. But lets say that it only saved you 30 min. In that case, as long as you make RMB3000/month or more, you should take the Airport Express. If you make less than that, you should take the bus.

What! 25RMB? That's too expensive. The air port bus only cost 16RMb.
